Fall 2014-Spring 2015 Script

It's been one heck of a semester, y'all. This semester I taught the English Academic Cooperative, a project-based course designed to provide students with hands-on work experience. Our objective was to create this year's issue of Script, our campus literary and art journal. Script was founded in 1986, which means it has quite the legacy. Historically, English faculty members have edited and assembled the journal. My class this Spring was the first-ever student editorial staff.

Other firsts: I developed the first online submission manager. This, coupled with my students' amazing promotional efforts, helped us to more than double the number of student submissions this year. We launched the first online version of the journal, meaning we could consider an expanded set of genres. This issue features the first student musicians ever published in Script. I've been coordinating with the campus libraries to digitize all the past issues of Script, so students will be able to access the full history of the publication like never before.

Leading this class was intense, challenging, and the most fun I've had as a teacher yet. My students made an excellent team. I am truly impressed by their hard work, dedication, and creativity. They selected, edited, and designed the entire publication and the website. I am so proud of what we made together.

Radius

Proud to say my poem "Dear Raven-Symoné" is up over at Radius.

I am grateful to editor Victor D. Infante for what he said about it when he shared on Facebook: "There's a meme that was going around the Internet of a guy with a hose spraying down a house that isn't burning, while the one next to it is on fire. The guy with the hose says to the obviously distraught homeowner, 'Hey, man. ALL houses matter.' This poem by Logen Cure predates the ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ movement a bit, but it's a good little illustration of how being able to blithely choose an identity without repercussion is an expression of privilege, and how it's not quite so simple for everyone."

Keep it real, y'all. Cheers.

Poetry at Round Top recap

There is no way to adequately describe my experience at Poetry at Round Top. It was an absolute revelation. I am changed as a poet and as a person. I will do my best to tell you about it.

I arrived Thursday and with the help of my friend Lucas Jacob, found my way to my room on the campus of the gorgeous Festival Hill. On my way, I bumped into one of my favorite poets, Lauren Berry. If you look far enough back in my entries here, you will see that her book, The Lifting Dress, has been tremendously influential for me. I had the pleasure of getting to know her better over the course of the festival.

The first event I attended was a panel of feature poets discussing different elements of creating a full length book. It was interesting and helpful, particularly given where I am with my poet life of late.

That evening I attended the first featured readings in the concert hall, which is far and away the most beautiful venue I've ever seen for a reading. Carrie Fountain and Patricia Smith read. Carrie Fountain's poems were so lovely, funny and sharp, driven by such a clear, incisive voice. Patricia Smith's poems were stunning, heartbreaking, difficult in the best of ways. I was definitely not the only person who got emotional. I bought their books, Fountain's Burn Lake and Smith's Blood Dazzler, which they graciously signed for me.

That night I attended the Fellows Reading in this bizarre and wonderful space underneath the chapel. It was pretty much a party. I had lovely conversations with poets from all over, including some of the features.

Saturday morning started early with fantastic readings by Laura Van Prooyen and Malachi Black right after breakfast. I can't think of a better way to start a Saturday, frankly. I loved Laura Van Prooyen's poems as well as her reflections on living in Texas. Malachi Black's work was powerful and spiritual -- like church in the best of ways.

After that, I attended a panel of feature poets discussing their writing lives. I love that they took "writing" in "writing lives" as both an adjective and a verb. They talked about their lives as writers and the act of writing their lives. Of course they did.

After lunch, I attended the craft Q&A with Sharon Olds, followed by the readings by Kevin Prufer and Michael McGriff. Both readings were top notch and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

After that, I participated in the open mic. Lots of attendees participated and it was fun to hear everyone's work. I also really enjoyed my brief time on that gorgeous stage. I read "PTSD at 28," which was very well-received.

Dinner at Festival Hill was lovely, followed by readings by Richard Blanco and Sharon Olds. Richard Blanco was the poet for the last inauguration, so he shared that poem and some of his experiences surrounding that tremendous honor. I particularly enjoyed what he had to say about the concepts of home, country, and our obsessions as poets. I can't even describe the experience of Sharon Olds reading, except to say that it was like magic. I appreciated her honesty and openness.

I had the unbelievable honor of spending time with many of the feature poets Saturday evening. They were truly lovely, gracious, good humans and I am so happy I got the opportunity to get to know them a bit better.

Sunday morning, I sat next to the wonderful Ellen Bass at breakfast, then attended her powerful, moving, and unforgettable reading. Then I took a very illuminating workshop about the line break with Richard Blanco. I headed back home after that. It was kind of bizarre to leave -- it was so intense and awesome in that literal way that it filled me with awe. I very much hope I can go back next year.

Thanks so much to everyone who makes this amazing festival happen, thank you to the feature poets, and everyone who shared this incredible experience with me.

So here's a selfie of a happy poet in some Indian paintbrushes at Festival Hill. Cheers, y'all.

AIPF recap

Alright, y'all, I had a blast at the Austin International Poetry Fest! It was super action-packed.

Friday, I taught my Craft and Confession workshop at the Austin Community College Rio Grande campus. It was well-attended, the discussion was lively, and several poets took the time to let me know how much they enjoyed it. Later that day, I attended an excellent workshop lead by the incomparable Suzi Q. Smith about identity and what we inherit in this world. That evening, I was featured in the LGBT reading at the amazing feminist bookshop, BookWoman. I had a great time and I was honored to read with so many amazing LGBT artists and allies. Check out this photo from that reading:

Saturday, I started the day at a workshop about the line break. I followed that up by attending another fantastic reading, the Woman Read, also at BookWoman. I finished off the day featuring at Brave New Books, where I read some pieces from Still, my forthcoming chapbook from Finishing Line Press.

Sunday morning, I attended a delicious brunch at NeWorld Deli, then headed back home, absolutely exhausted but very happy.

Thanks to AIPF folks for including me and working so hard to organize this massive and awesome event.

I got to meet so many lovely and talented people. I should see some of the same folks at Poetry at Round Top next weekend. I can't wait!

Cheers!

Good news never gets old, y'all. My chapbook, Letters to Petrarch, will come out from Unicorn Press within the next few months! I've seen the design and it is just gorgeous. I am humbled and honored that LtP found its home with this venerable press. They released my first chapbook, In Keeping, back in 2008. I will let y'all know when the new book is available!

I've got another chapbook in the works! Still will be released by Finishing Line Press this fall. The book will have an advance sale period (when you can take advantage of discounted shipping!) starting May 19, 2015.

As always, I am a very happy poet.

Happy New Year

Y'all, it's been a great year! I've been a very lucky poet.

My readings this fall were an absolute pleasure. I had the honor of reading with so many talented people. Check out this photo from my November reading at the Upstairs Gallery in Arlington:

The Pandora's Box Island of Misfit Toys show was festive and amazing. I felt kinda famous because the show was promoted by folks like D Magazine and the Dallas Observer. I'm happy to share this video from the reading with y'all. It's "Make it Memorable," from the EP.

The Pegasus reading was lovely. It was one of the final events for Two Bronze Doors. The other features and open mic participants were brilliant. I read several poems from Letters to Petrarch, my forthcoming chapbook from Unicorn Press.

I am pretty stoked for 2015. I think it's going to be another excellent year. Stay tuned for more news about upcoming publications, workshops, and readings.

Cheers!

Fall Updates

Y'all, I've got a lot happening. My Craft and Confession workshop for the Fort Worth Writer's Boot Camp was a success! Check out this awesome Fort Worth Weekly article about the Boot Camp. They totally mention my name.

For the Spring semester at Tarrant County College, I'll be teaching the Academic Cooperative course. Students in the course will serve as the editorial staff for the campus lit mag. My campus has never done this before, and I am beyond excited.

I've got a few poems forthcoming in Penhall Publishing's Not Dead Yet anthology of survivor poetry, set to be released October 31. Join the virtual release party on Facebook for updates and get ready to buy a copy when it drops. It should be a powerful anthology, to say the least.

Also, I've got a chapbook coming out. Unicorn Press will release Letters to Petrarch in 2015! I can't even begin to say how thrilled I am.

So many great things happening!

Pandora's Box and Dallas Poets Community readings

My Pandora's Box reading was excellent! The Margo Jones Theater is one of my favorite venues for poetry in DFW. I did a 30-minute set of poems from my in-progress series (see Next Big Thing post below). The crowd was warm and wonderful. Many thanks to the hosts, Christopher Soden, Paul Koniecki, and Dan Collins, for having me and working so hard to put together this stellar reading series. Check out this awesome photo, thanks to Rosie Lindsey Photography.

The Dallas Poets Community has its readings on the first Friday of the month. I was meant to be the feature poet back in February, but the reading was canceled due to inclement weather. The DPC typically doesn't have a July feature because of Independence Day, but they graciously had their first ever Thursday reading so that I could be rescheduled. I'm pleased to report that lots of folks came to the show and a great time was had by all! Here is a video of the opening of my 20-minute set. Hope y'all enjoy!
